The definition of a hero is an indefinite these days. From the witty and loveable Cyrano de Bergerac, to Lassie, to the multi-colored anthologies produced by Marvel Comics and Stan Lee, the idea of a hero is something that changes with the latest fads and fashions. My idea of a hero has been shaped by all of these ideas in one way or another, becoming this faceless being who sits in the back of my mind and criticizes those who are presented to the general public as heroes. He is kind beyond all measure, and always does the right thing, even though that can sometimes make him unpopular. Hes not muscular, but average sized, perhaps even below average when it comes to the cookie cutter manly physique. He is only strong when he needs to be and never fights for himself. These self-sacrificial qualities do not make him stupid by any means. Razor sharp wits and a winning charm help pull this nameless champion out of more sticky situations that you can stick a shake at. My brave man is not without his flaws. Because of his sharp sense of humor, he tends to be rather critical of ignorant people and takes a bit of sick pride in browbeating the stupid with logic. Observing the people dubbed with the title hero today, the figure in the back of my head is still dissatisfied. The last suggestion for someone to meet his standards was countered with the equivalent of Are you kidding me? Determined not to fail at the task to find a hero to his and my standards, I made one. His name is Khalil, a lanky, always smiling nobody who has the potential to be somebody great. Playing the role of conscience to those around him, hes a hero in disguise who would rather talk through an issue than fight. A practitioner of Capoeira, he is strong when he needs to be and takes everyone at their best possible value, regardless of their history. Khalil is the superman Ive wanted all along, and in my heart I carry him and try to imitate him as much as possible. |
